440 repeater network linked by Allstar Mixed Mode Input and Allstar

Basically the big caveat is that the DR2X if placed in the external controller mode, the transmitter looses internal PL injection and an external PL is required. I developed a $5 Arduino nano that would create any one of the standard PL tones and inject it into the DB 15 pin connector.. .
Which is another problem.

The DR2X external controller looks like a VGA 3 row DB15 connector except you can't use a VGA cable as not all 15 pins are available or used. First I ordered just the connectors and figured I'd save money making my own connector, the DB15 literally melted as I soldered pins. What crap we got picking up connectors at a swap-n-shop from some vendor.
I remember I had to order a high density (3 row) DB-15 1 to 1 patch cable from one of the electronic suppliers like Digikey or Mouser. It was about $15 plus $8.95 shipping. Then cut it in half, and ring out the colors to the pins. The cable I did buy had a "frame ground"- bare wire, which I felt was a quality touch.

I ordered a URIx from DMK engineering to front end the Raspberry PI (RPI).. That provides all the signals necessary for audio and handshaking. Another $100. Then an interface box because basically your going from a 15 pin cable to a box with an arduino Nano in it to a cable with a matching 25pin conntector to the URIx, then a USB A-B cable to the raspberry PI...

I run 2 repeaters on RPI 2's and have for 4-5-6 years. They run flawlessy. About that time or shortly there after the RPI's any flavor became UNOBTAINUM.

So it was boxed and placed on a shelf in my workshop.
I agree since digital modes- Doesn't matter Fusion,Dstar, DMR the outputs of the repeater should be Analog. Especiaqlly with FUSION, the input should be Auto switching to take advantage of Fusions ability to make a weak noisy analog signall perfect into the repeater. Many people say it increases the range of a HT 20-30-40%..(your results may vary).. No matter what the group uses to get into the repeater everyone will hear it on the output..
The 15 pin external controller connection can be configured Recieve AMS- Auto Mode Select and the transmitter Analog only.

There is no advantage to run the repeater output otherwise as the repeater has height and power, all ready overcoming the limitations of HT to HT direct communications. The BASIC 101 1st chapter of "what is a repeater."

So once you have a DR2X repeater, 'Please don't buy a chinese duplexer, GEt CELLWAVE, TX-RX, Sinclare, Motorola, etc.

Then to use HAMVIOP RPI- Hardware including a URIx from DMK engineering, and knit everything together. You're talking about $200-250. But the HAMVIOP ALLSTAR RPI works great as a repeater controller and gives you voice ID's and all the bells and whistles of a $700 repeater controller. Plus you can remote into it and modify it as you please.

THe negative, - if internet is not available at the site, most ISP's (like my group) have to pay commercial rate, because it's a business ---even though we are ham operators. Fortunately we share it with a commercial business on site but if we had our own it would be $100 a month plus taxes. So what you may have to do is use a remote UHF link to the DR2X, The DR2X has a second receiver for remote control, but legally you can only remote control repeaters above 222Mz. Lot's of inexpensive internet plans do not provide for UUDP-TCP connections either. ISP's view those as needed by "commercial users".. like someone running a server or a business out of their home. Bang business rates again.
